These indices are made up of the stocks of the largest and most well-known companies in the US and are often used to represent the overall performance of the US stock market.Indices are calculated using a weighted average of the prices of the component stocks. The weighting of each stock in the index is based on its market capitalization, or the total value of its outstanding shares. This means that the performance of larger companies has a greater impact on the index than smaller companies.Traders and investors can trade indices through futures contracts, options, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
